A Fair Response: Justice from the Inside
Secondary LIVE ACTION VIDEO

The program poses the questions: Whose values are being reflected in our laws? Is our charter going to help disadvantaged people? Should we punish our juvenile offenders or try to rehabilitate them? How well is our justice system keeping up with our changing society?

Canadian society is changing rapidly: women are continuing to enter the workforce; the make-up of the nuclear family is changing; society is becoming increasingly multicultural; technology is revolutionizing everyday life. These realities have created a challenge to Canada's legal system - a challenge that requires the lawmakers to update and reflect these social changes.

A Fair Response: Justice from the Inside examines the new Charter of Rights and Freedoms through three issues: a landmark charter challenge made by a young female hockey player, Justine Blainey; the function of our criminal justice system as it pertains to a young offender; and the demand for justice by Canada's Native People.

Thought-provoking commentary is provided throughout the video by Canadians whose daily lives touch the law: the police, lawyers, judges, community leaders, and race relations officers. 24 min.
