Into
the Twenty-First Century: Canadian Foreign Policy
Secondary LIVE ACTION VIDEO
Into
the Twenty-First Century is an energetic thought-provoking look at
the major themes and issues in Canadian foreign policy from the Second
World War until the present. Military and economic security, diplomacy,
human rights, international trade, foreign aid and the environment are
examined and debated by five experts in these areas: Alan Gotleib,
former Canadian Ambassador to the United States; Gerald Caplan,
journalist and expert on human rights; Rosalie Bertell, military
security and environment expert; Alexander Szemberg, publisher of The
Idler magazine and foreign policy analyst; and Patricia Adams, director
of Probe International, a development and environmental organization.
Evocative footage and strong, contemporary music underscore the
narration and interview clips.
Into
the Twenty-First Century begins with a fast-paced montage of images
of the political, military and economic power of the Soviet Union and
the Western alliance intercut with images of third world poverty and
strife. This opening montage sets the dramatic tension for the video and
asks: What are Canada's foreign policy priorities? How big a role does
economic self-interest play in foreign policy decisions? Does it ever
undermine other priorities, such as human rights, security, and feeding
the poor? Is the goal of insuring our own prosperity compatible with the
goal of helping others? Into the Twenty-First Century provides a
spectrum of opinion for debate-it does not seek to provide pat or simple
answers. 24 min.
