Lucy Maud Montgomery was Canada's first children's author of worldwide renown. The most popular of her books, Anne of Green Gables (1908) was the first of a series of books about Anne Shirley, an imaginative, vivacious and intelligent orphan who has since attained mythical status. The people and the life of the village of Avonlea in Prince Edward Island are brought to life with humour and realistic characterizations.

Featured in this video are archival photos as well as contemporary shots of Prince Edward Island, including Cavendish, the town upon which the fictional "Avonlea" was based. Also included are biographical information, excerpts from Montgomery's journals, and information about her books. 1993. 24 min.
