Contemporary Canadian Painting
Intermediate - Secondary

Contemporary Canadian Painting traces developments in Canadian art from the end of World War II through the 70s. Today in Canada there are modern artists whose work spans virtually every style of both representational and non-representational painting. Never has there been such diversity within active painting styles. Significant trends, movements, and styles are analyzed and illustrated within their historical framework, providing students of art, art history, and Canadian studies with a coherent overview of the often baffling world of contemporary Canadian paintings.

Beyond Impressionism: Non-Representational Painting in Canada explores the realm of non-representational art. Beginning with a brief recap of the movements toward abstraction in Europe and early experiments with abstraction both in Europe and in Canada, the program goes on to analyze the first totally non-representational paintings of "Les Automatistes," the abstract expressionism and action painting of "Painters II," the hard-edge painting of "Les Plasticiens," and finally the "Color Field" school, with its many aspects.

Back to the Egg: The Continuing Representational Traditions analyzes the famous forms of representational painting that have continued through the heyday of non-representationalism, and which are today reemerging in popularity and importance. The program includes discussion of Impressionism, Expressionism, Folk Art, and Realism, in their various contemporary manifestations.
