A
History of Canadian Folk Music
Intermediate - Secondary CLASSIC
This
program presents an engaging overview of Canadian history through the
songs of its people. The program is designed to increase students'
comprehension of the varieties of backgrounds, experiences, and purposes
that helped shape Canadian folk music. The program chronicles the
development of Canadian folk music from its aboriginal and European
roots, through the introduction of the ballad by 17th century pioneers,
and subsequent uniquely Canadian compositions inspired by events in
Canadian history. Documentary visuals, both historical and contemporary,
are combined with a wealth of Canadian art.
The
Country Grows surveys the folk music of Canada's pioneer days,
including songs of the Metis, sea shanties and fo'c's'le songs,
lumbering songs, complaint ballads, and many others.
Folk
Music Before Confederation begins with the music of the Indian and
Inuit, then traces the French and British folk music traditions as they
were introduced and adapted to life in the new land.
Folk
Music in the Modern Era traces Canada's folk music from the
beginning of the 20th century to the present. Labour songs, depression
songs, the folk boom of the 60s, and the contemporary folk scene
highlight the program.
