Jewish Life in Canada - William Kurelek

Jewish Life in Canada is one portion of a series of paintings that Kurelek began on Canada's major ethnic groups. The paintings depict episodes in Jewish immigration, Sabbath and holiday celebrations, a Jewish wedding, and Jewish home and community life. These scenes provide a personal, pictorial history of the Jewish people in Canada.

Last of the Arctic - William Kurelek
Intermediate - Secondary

Kurelek traveled to Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic to do the series of paintings to serve as a record of the age-old customs and traditions of the Inuit. The paintings recreate soapstone carving, seal and whale hunting, children playing, stalking caribou, igloo building, storytelling, games, and celebrations. Kurelek's commentary, written in a warm, simple style, augments the paintings to give students a fascinating glimpse of Inuit heritage.
