An
Audio Visual History of Canadian Sports
Intermediate
- Secondary CLASSIC
Canadian
sports have evolved in a unique manner closely tied
to the land, its geography, and its people. As the program traces the
history and evolution of Canada's sporting traditions, the relationships
between sports and the socio-historical contexts in which they develop
become clear.
The
Beginning traces native life and sports. French/English conquest and
exploration, games of strength and endurance, sports as an extension of
occupations. Sports are seen as a tool for engaging in new relationships
and as a means of solidifying community bonds.
Post-Confederation
Sports presents the diversity of sports as the country expands and
prospers. New sports, the development of organized sports and the
conflicts between amateurism and professionalism in sports are
discussed.
The
Twentieth Century focuses upon the radical changes in all areas of
sports and recreation in the modern era: physical education in schools,
the building of the Olympics, and the development of sports and
recreation as a business.
