Acid Rain
Secondary

By seeing what acid rain is, what it does, and where it comes from, students will come to understand the seriousness of the problem. Dead lakes, dying forests, and crop damage mean a loss of billions of dollars to the tourist, forestry, agriculture, and fishing industries. Whatever steps are taken, the problem will be with us for many years.

What is Acid Rain? explains how sulphur and nitrogen oxide emissions from sources such as ore smelters, power plants, and automobile exhaust undergo chemical changes. Students will see what areas are most susceptible and why.

Effects of Acid Rain discusses the impact on the environment resulting from prolonged exposure to acid rain. Aquatic life suffers and gradually becomes extinct, forests experience slower growth, certain crops become damaged, humans can suffer from bronchial diseases or contaminated drinking water.

What Can We Do? examines the complex web of economic, political, environmental, and social issues surrounding acid rain. Even though we have the technology to reverse acid rain, it is not a simple matter to put that technology in place.
